I offer mole control in East Devon / West Dorset and South Somerset, providing a professional service to Farms, Golf Courses, Schools, Sports fields and of course gardens both large and small.
As a traditional molecatcher, I operate a strict no mole - no fee policy, and by offering to produce the body of the mole or moles as confirmation of my success my clients are left with the reassurance of knowing that the job has been completed.
Out of respect for the mole I use only humane traps, never poisons or gas, after all whilst we may need to control the moles numbers there is absolutely no need to let any mole die a slow painful, lingering death.
Whilst you may not feel well disposed to a mole who is digging up and destroying your garden, specifically your lawn, it is as well to understand what is going on below ground.
Moles construct tunnels for two main purposes, these are to catch food primarily earth worms, but other insects and maybe even some carrion such as dead mice will also be considered food. and secondly to provide a safe place to live.
The main living tunnels maybe several feet below ground, this also helps ensure food can be found even if the surface of the soil is frozen.
The shallower feed tunnels are the ones that cause gardeners problems, these are constructed at various depths but normally around 6" to 8" deep this is because this is where most earth worms live. The poorer your soil, the less earth worms you will have, this leads the mole to construct many more tunnels and hence many more 'molehills' in his endless quest to locate around his own body weight in food every day.
Moles are solitary creatures only allowing other moles into their territory during the breeding season, normally around April / May, the young leave to find territories of their own during June, so if you have a mole earlier in the year, please contact me as soon as possible or your garden may end up being the home of many moles...... if you think one makes a mess consider what six might do!!
